Going to start using this blog again to show more personal artwork and doodles. We got laid of from Google in July, and we're right now looking for work, but that means lots of time for some to do some fun drawing. Annnnnnd I get to play around with our new Cintiq that we got when we left Google. Needless to say its awesome and I'm excited to see what kind of work I can get done with it. New Job time

Man I have to get on this blog some more. Well I have some cool news for anyone that reads this for latest Bill news. Today I'm starting fulltime at my new Job. For that last couple of weeks I've been working part time at Lowry Digital doing digital cleanup work on films, and now I'm there full time. Hooyah!! This is really an ideal situation for Karen and I right now, the job means a more steady income than what I was making at Universal, and since I'll be working nights shifts, we won't have to worry about paying for child care once the baby shows up. Talk about a lot of stress off our shoulders. I'm hoping that I can try a theory about working jobs that aren't art jobs. It was Bobby Chiu that said he'd rather have a regular job than a bad art job, and my last fulltime job was definately a bad art job. I'm hoping to begin work on some personal projects now. One of witch is a strip Karen and I are currently working on about our experience being pregant. So things are looking up, and Karen and I are plugging along and doing quite well.

I got the markers I'm going to help sell at the Anime Expo convention annnnnd they're pretty cool. They remind me of copix pens but these don't look they their designed to be refilled...
I'm assuming. Anyways their called "touch" and the come with chiseled tips, a fine tip, or a brush tip. Here's some various doodles I've done with them.

Well it looks like Summer's finally here, evne though we haven't really started Summer Hours yet or are making usual summer numbers, but its hasn't been too slow at Universal. If anyone is going to be at Anime Expo here in LA, I'll be working at the Shinhan International booth. They're a Korean Art supply company and I've been hired to do art demonstrations with their products. Should be fun, so stop buy and say hi if you're there. Anyway here are some more Caricatures.

These people we're terrific, nothing makes a long 11 hour slow day at City Walk worth it, than having people laugh as much as these guys did.

Universal Was on fire yesterday (6-1-08) and boy was I glad to be out of town. Here are some of the sketches from the Saturday before.

I started out with a drawing of Sam, and then realized that I could draw Rob's face from the negative space, and then I added Aaramando and myself for good measure.

Sam had me draw a picture of his friend. That's how you get the ladies, introduce them to your friends that will draw funny pictures of them.

These customers were great. They loved their picture, even though I slightly screwed up drawing the guys head.

I think this girl got mad because a lot of people were crowding around laughing at her picture.

Well I'm 26 today and as you can see the years have been good to me. My skin is a healthy greenish glow, and I've grown very well through the years. This birthday should be fun as I stomp a city to the ground.

Even though turning 26 isn't really all that of a milestone this birthday is something to remember because its the year that Karen and I become parents!! We're both still jazzed and anxious at the same time, but so far everything is going well, and we have a lot to be happy about this year. So we're still crossing our fingers for a Halloween baby zombie or otherwise.

We're having a baby!!! Well we will be having a baby, but yeah the news is out Karen is pregnant and we're eagerly anxiously expecting a bouncing little baby!! The whole thing is completely unexpected, and totally blowing our minds, but we're also excited at the idea of being parents. So everyone keep their fingers crossed we're hoping for a Halloween baby. So I'm working with my pal Chris Meesey and we find photos of this guy lying around the booth.
This guy is so funny looking we decide we have go for it and draw up some quick sketches of the guy.

Of course we can't stop there so we draw some more and see what more we can do with this guy's face.

This one's awesome!

Now I'm realizing that the side view and the front view of this guy make him look like completely different people. The front view got him smiling with big grinny teeth and squinty little eyes, while the side view makes him look kinda like Shia LeBeouf. So I tried to reconcile the two views.

Some great videos about a political cartoonist's assessment of some of the candidates. Great stuff, its also a nice little window into some philosophy of caricature. I think this guy could be a little more outrageous with his exaggeration, but the finished works are still very amusing. I wish as a theme park caricaturist I had a chance to get to know my subjects more, but I only get 3-5 minutes to capture a person this guy gets days.

Thoughts on Beowulf

Okay so I read this article on Animation Magazine .com and heres a short quote.

Beowulf is a very good film. Even my wife, who is not so much an animation fan, really enjoyed it. In addition to offering a great story and compelling characters, the movie represents something that we really need right now. It’s an animated movie for adults, and it’s opening in wide release in the United States. This is huge, folks. If the film does well, it could open all kinds of doors. Studio execs who only see dollar signs in cuddly critters making broad jokes to pop-music soundtracks will wake up and realize that audiences want to see different kinds of stories told with digital technology. For moviegoers who don’t normally attend animated films, Beowulf could also be the perfect vehicle for easing them into the fold. They won’t be jarred by something that is too far removed from live-action, and they won’t be embarrassed to show up without a kid. Disney/Pixar’s Ratatouille and 20th Century Fox’s The Simpsons recently laid a bit of groundwork in this area by stepping outside the family film box and capturing the imagination of grown-ups, perhaps even more than the small children they brought with them or, more importantly, didn’t bring with them.

The general public doesn’t care if something is mo-capped or key-framed, they just want to be entertained. So the fear that performance-capture movies will become the new standard is mostly unfounded. True, studios will largely favor their economic model, but the money they save by not hiring a room full of animators will be largely offset by the expensive stars they tap to perform the roles. Besides, the big key-frame studios aren’t going anywhere. Imagine the possibilities if Pixar suddenly felt free to create a PG-13 fantasy, action or horror flick. What if DreamWorks Animation believed they could make money by creating a CG graphic novel adaptation along the lines of Sin City or 300?

I can't help but respond

This film may be good for pushing the idea that 3D technology is not just limited to kiddy stories about talking animals and such, but its not going to be good for the animators as they are pushed more and more out of the process. This sort of motion capture ,Yes, requires animators to sit at a desk tweaking the movement and streamlining the performance, but it knocks the importance of the animator down. All the decisions on what the character does, oh he/she emotes, performs, its all up to the actor and director.
So I have to ask what's the point of translating the actor's to 3D in the first place? If its to achieve a stylized look, why not use a process like 300 or Sky Captain. I mean if the idea is to capture to realistic movements of actors, and even match the 3D models to look like the actors, why not just film the actors and leave it at that? You animate a story because you want to show something that isn't real, come to life, and that's what hand drawn, puppeteers, stop motion and 3D animated films do. Mo-caping an entire 3D movie like this seem like an extra process that's unnecessary. All it does is lessen the need for the craft that animators spend their lives learning to perfect. Animation is going to be reduced to a skill that is open to people who will only have to sit at screen and push a mouse around and follow directions. So no I can't see this being very good for animation.

And one more thing, common, Just because its presented in 3D does not mean its animated!!!

Karen and I can't be the only ones who think this. I mean don't get us wrong, we love Pixar and all the great films that they do, but when they make a movie that's all about finding great talent in unexpected places, one can't help but be like suurrree. I mean Rats maybe a be able to cook, but if they really want to cook, they should have gone to school at Cal Arts. Cause when it comes to looking for that great unexpected talent, they only seem to look in one place.

The real News is that Karen and I will be celebrating our 1st anniversary!! HOLY CRAP!!! Its been a year already?? Well I guess Time flies when you spend the year, moving, looking for work, geting work, woking, looking for new work, comic con, holidays, birthdays, and landing a new job. Still feels like we just got married yesterday or something, wow, still blows my mind. But its also been a year of fun, and adventures galore, so if this was the first year I can't wait to see what happens the second and the third, and well all of them :D .

Also wish Karen Luck, she's got a job interview for a PA position AT DISNEY FRICKEN FEATURE ANIMATION!!!! I know, she'll probably kill me for posting it here, but I know she's totally got the job. Anyways, enjoy!!

Once again I went to ye ole barber and had my hair cut. I feel like a shaved goat every time because I let my hair grow for too long in between hair cuts. Also it makes my head look taller. The funny thing was the barber lady, she was this little old Armenian lady and she made me out to be a very tragic case of male pattern baldness. Apparently because I'm 24 and losing my hair, "oh so young, and so ugly". Whatever, I only have a small bald spot on the back of my head, and at 6'5" people only see it when I sit down.
Besides Karen thinks its cute so I'm not messing with it.

So huge upload, I feel bad that haven't been updating this blog very much, but work has been busy and I don't get do much doodling anymore. These are all pages from one of my sketch books I had when I worked at Universal. They're alot of people just walking aorund the ark, and me being bored out of my mind. I don't work at Universal anymore now that I have a "real job" but I do miss the crowd of unsuspecting victems to draw.

This guy was probably the best wolverine impersonator they had. The lady is just some funny looking lady.Monkey man.

Fat spiderman, he was one of the many people playing spiderman at Universal, although he wasn't nearly as fat as I have him here, he did have a good gut going.

Karens B-day fun time, and Rollercoasters!!

So Monday was Karens 25th birthday, and man did we have a great time. Turns out the Knotts Berry Farm has some great off season packages availiable through their resort hotel. We got a nights stay at the hotel, free breakfast buffet, 30$ voucher for the in house restaurant, free bottle of champange in our room, and two tickets to the theme park all for about $170. Not bad for a weekend of great fun.

So anyways I think the real big thing was I actually got myself to go on the rides and rollercoasters. I know, I'm still blown away by it. Usually I'm a big chicken when it comes to rollercoasters, but Karen loves em, and I didn't want to chicken out on her on her birthday. And I had a great time, man if you're planning on going to Knotts, you gotta try their new Silver Bullet ride. Apparently its just like Batman at 6 flags, and man is it fun!!! I was terrified to go on it, but at the end of the day I couldn't get enough, and we ended up riding it 3 times. Plus there all the other fun rides like Ghost Rider and Motezoomas Revenge, which kicks ass by the way. It was a great weekend, and I was glad I got over my fear, and it really gave Karen a good fun birthday. I'm still a little wary of rollercoasters, but now I'm filled with good fun memories of how much fun they are, so I think I'll be okay.

So I've learned that when you have an actual job and your busy working, you have less and less time to post on your blog. Anyways, everyones been asking me how the new job is going, and the only way I can sum up my experience is by saying.....TOTALLY FREAKING AWESOME!!!!

Okay so maybe that was a bit much, but its has been alot of fun. I'm doing alot of drawing in Flash with a wacom, and now I've fallen in love with tablets and I gotta get one of my own. I do mainly character designs for different websites. I wish I could post some of my real work, but I can't, so instead I have stuff that i've done during my lunch hour. I think that cool thing though Is I'm actually doing character designing, thats whats really got me excited.

Its also been pretty intense, I work with two other guys (kyle and randy) and they've got way more experience doing this than I do, so sometimes I get stressed, but so far everyone is likeing my work as much as I'm liking theirs. Anywho, that's whats been going, on, also karen and I did a flash commercial for a contest for a local radio station. I really proud of her, and I think it came out funnier than some of the other ones that actually made it to the finals, but ehh whatcha gonna do.

I haven't posted here in a long time, but I have good news. I got a new job!!!!!!! That's right no longer am I a cold shivering caricature artist, I am now a full time illustrator. Take it!!! The company I work for is called the Dohring company, from what I know, they do web sites and they are a market research company ,according their business cards, but they're hirng a team of cartoonists for some various projects, that I can't say what, because I signed a non disclosure agreement, and hell I haven't even worked one day yet, I start next Monday. I'm really excited because the creative director is a guy that worked for Film Roman, and worked for Disney on Hercules. I know I'll learn and conitnue to imporve my art and the steady pay and benefits will take out alot of financial stress. As I work there I'll be sure to post any work that I can when allowed. Whoo hooo!!!!

This was a stressful week, becuase not only was I pursuing this job, but both Karen and I got interviews at South Park. We didn't get the job, but it was a thrill to just be called in for an interview. It definiatly made us a proud of ourselves, and we're renewed with confidence to keep working at getting our feet in this crazy industry.

Wow I haven't updated for a while. I've been busy working, job hunting, working in projects and of course being stressed out. Luckily not too stressed out, just stressed enough. I almost got a job atucally doing flash animation, but I guess the production fell thorugh and I never got to do. It sounded cool but oh well, now I get to sit an wait on some other jobs I've applied for.

Anyways, Karen and I have been getting into "Heros" on NBC. The show is pretty cool, but I keep wanting to call it "Powers" even though it has nothing to do with "Powers" at all. Well not much else to say i guess, I'm pretty uninspired with my post, at least I've got some cool Heros artwork to throw at you.And some random sketches from work.

"Hello True Believers"- Stan Lee

Well even though it looks like there's a bit of a lull in character design jobs , I found postings on Nickelodeon's job website for storyboard positions. Lately I've been hesitant to even look into the positions, because although I can do storyboards, A: I don't have a portfolio, and B: I don't have any samples to even put in said portfolio. Buuuuut I was feeling good after the illustration test, so I decided to work on some boards and APPLY for those positions. It was fun, and stressfull. For instance I found quickly that I am very used to drawing on large surfaces, and had difficulty switching to drawing in the tiny little itty bity storyboard boxes. But I managed, and after slowing my pace down and really putting some work into the sketches, I think they came out pretty good. So in a week I got three boards done, not bad I think. One is of a scene from the movie "The Man Who Knew to Little". It's a small scene, and I chose it because I've never scene the movie. ( I know I know, I'm lame) And I just recently ,after finishing the boards, found out that its a Bill Murray movie. But it was a challenge to follow the script that I downloaded, and that was good, because I really wanted to challenge myself. The other two is a small fight scene I boarded off the top of my head, and the third is the now official storyboard for the "Nerd" animation project Karen and I are in the stages of finishing. (stay tuned it will get done, I swear!!!) Well I turned them into Nickelodeon on Tuesday, it was either that or vote, and ...ehh.... Today I dropped them off at Cartoon Network. Its a little more stressful to have turned in my portfolio now, because now, they actually have positions open that I'm actually appling for!!! So wish me luck!! I posted some pages from some of them here. Hopefully they're big enough to see. Enjoy!!

Its the day after halloween!!! In my opinion its just as good as halloween, because now I get to look at all of the left over halloween candy just waiting to be consumed. Anyways, so I didn't get the illustrator job, BOO, I got a nice fat rejection e-mail later that day, I think a few hours just after posting my blog entry about it. Doh, thing that sucks is, I don't really know what it was about my test entries that disqualified me. But that's okay, because it means I'm free to find an even better job!!! Those losers don't know what they missed, unless they're actually reading this, than they're not losers, only poor souls that didn't hire me. So I'll keep looking and keep sending my resume and portfolio out there, because there's gotta be something out there for me.

So huge update on my blog. Last wednsday I was in for a job interview with Pin USA. They design and make comemorative pins for Disney, Hard Rock Cafe and other clients. Well I suppose the interview went well because I was given an illustration test. So all last week I was busy working on this test while still going to work, and making a trip to Knotts Scarey Farm( whoo hoo ). I finished the test monday night and just turned it in Tuesday, one day before the due date of well...today. The test was fun, I had to design three pins for different events, a Hard Rock one for St. Patricks Day, a Mickey one for Spring break, and a Sticth (Ala Lilo and Stitch) pin for Valentines Day. The challenge was to draw in the styles I was given. It was difficult because I would have loved to redraw the characters in my own style. I found the Hard Rock one too be pretty simplethough, and for a strange reason Mickey was the hardest. I dunno, maybe I was stressing myself out, and tring to make it too perfect. Well since I had to give up my final drawings for the test I decided to post all my sketches and practice attempts here.

So now I play the waiting game. And I hate the waiting game, all my imagination does for me is create a ton of what if situations. All in all I'm just happy to have gotten the test. To me in means that I had enough skills shown in my portfolio, that they wanted to see what else I can do. Hopefully I did. Wish me luck!!!

Drawings and Job Interviews!

Wow I haven't posted here for a while. I've been busy with work, our website (http://www.10000zombies.com) and going to job interviews. I had one last week at Acme Licensing, they sell original artwork from animated shows and movies, they were looking for an illustrator and web artist. Unfortunately I think they were looking for more of a web artist, because although ,I thought, the interview went well, and they liked my illustration skills, I was quickly notified later that day, that I didn't get the job. Oh well, would have been a fun job. Cool thing is that now this Wednsday, I have another interview with a company that creates pins and they're looking for an illustrator as well. So wish me luck.

Anyways here are a bunch of drawings and what not from this week, I have a lot more, but they're still being finished, and they're more halloween themed. I'll post them all up here as the holiday gets closer. The cowboy drawings are from an old joke that my dad used to always tell. Its not too funny of a joke, but I always liked how he told it, and I figured it make a great comic of short of something. So I'm working on developing the two main characters. This is the bad jack character. I'm liking the big mountain man look, makes him look meaner.

So I'm tring to draw more video game stuff, or more "realistic" stuff I guess. And of course they end up being cartoony, except the dragon, its the least cartoony, but its still cartoony. Anyways, I think about all the game art of some videos games I like and all there artwork is either very animeish, or cartoony, or even comic like. Since when did anime and comic styles become realistic? Their just as much of a caricature of real life as Elmer Fudd is. So I say screw realism, I'll just apply what I know to different subject matter.

Of course in the end you're always going to have to cater to the studio's style, but here's a question, does being able to draw things relaistic make you a "better" atrist? I like to think no, but then again I could be making an excuse for me to not draw realistically. But think about it. There's skill in doing a phot realistic painting or draiwng, a hell of alot of skill and dedication, but is it any less skill or dedication needed to draw really great cartoons, or comics? I think thy're just different parts of the same skill, that is drawing. I mean whether or not you're draiwng superman, mickey mouse, or painting the naked modelm you still need to know and understand, anatomy, proportion, perpspective etc. I mean I know that if I sat down and really applied myself, and learned some of the techniques, I could draw a decent realistic drawing, and after time, it would be a very good drawing. But I can't do it as fast as I draw cartoons because I DRAW CARTOONS ALL THE TIME!!! But I could, because I know enough about the basics that I could do it.

So I guess I may just be bitching, I mean if I'm applyong to a job that wants more realistic looking subject matter, and I show them cartoons and say "hey hire me, I didn't show you anything of what you wanted, but I can, just trust me" that would be plain dumb, and stupid of me. But I think what I need to learn is to not criticize myself for not drawing realistic, I love to draw cartoony things, even if its just a little bit of cartooniness. I think when you simplify and exaggerate, it brings more life to things. If you want a realistic image, than take a photo, or hire someone else. I'm a cartoonist damn it!!!!

They're pretty standard, I could have loosened up and exaggerated a bit more, but, the guests actually had to pay for them, and I wanted to get invited back hopefully, because I mean come on, it was a free vacation, that I got paid to draw at.

No rant or anything today, just some drawings I did while bored at work. This weekend though I'm getting a well deserved vacation in Laughlin NEV with the Missus courtessy of a 4 hour caricature gig I'm working at a casino there. Not a bad deal, I get my room and food comped for two days, and I get paid 400 bucks for sitting around and making fun of people for 4 hrs. I'll try to take some pictures and post them up here when I get back.
I saw this guy in the park and decided to sketch him in a more quasi realistic fashion, ("quasi" because I can't get out of drawing things cartoony) but I didn't like his hand and arm so I redrew it diembodied off to the side. I liked the way he looked, so I decided to try and design a character off of him.

I was feeling especially in Love today. Good feeling.

Internships are scams I tells yah!!!!

Well they gotta be, it seems like the entire video game/animation/entertainment industry is held up by internships, err I mean, getting young students and grads to do a ton of work for nothing with the promise of a career and then dumping them. Although I personally haven't had any experience with an internship, I've heard plenty of horror stories, and worse I'm tired of looking for work, and all I see are unpaid internships. *Groan* Of course how can you blame the studios and businessmen, all they're doing is taking advantage of Artists' pasion for their work. Why bother "paying" professionals, when we can get a bunch of kids (who are dieing to proove themselves) to do the work for us. Well that's my rant on that subject. I sometimes feel like I missed out of something when I didn't enroll in any internships when I was in school, but then I hear the horror stories and I think, "Well maybe it wasn't all it was Cooked up to be" I'll make it through good old hard work and old timey fun.

Boy oh boy am I excited about what went down at Disney TV on Wednsday. After getting lost in the humbling experience they call a studio, I finally met up with the rep that would take a look at my portfolio. Really nice guy too, its always nice when your portfolio is reviewed by someone that actually seems to care who you are and what you have to show. He tells me about how usually artist are brought on by the directors and producers and how the industry is a tight knit group. Like 1 or 2 degrees of seperation, I think is how he put it. Anyways, people usually know who they want for a show, before the show is even greenlit, so being a newbie in the industry, that's not probably what would happen to me. What is cool though, is the guy was building a database of people's artwork that he could show to producers, directers etc when they would need artists to fill in positions or work for existing shows. Well long story short, he looks at my stuff, likes it, and says he'll put me on a waiting list of outside the studio artists, that when extra work is needed they'll farm the work out as freelance gigs.

So I'm pretty jazzed about the review, granted its not a job, and I don't know when or even if I'll ever see any freelance work, but its still a big boost to my confindence, and really feels good. He wants me to even send in my demo reel, so he can have other examples of what I can do, so I'm hurridly tring to put in together in a dvd. So all in all it was a good day, and I feel even better about my chances of at least getting my foot in the door.

Portfolio Time

Here are some pages from my portfoilio I'm put together. And well I'm sucking in my gut and finally getting it out there. Its easy as pie, and the hardest thing in the world. Of course I'm probably making it harder. It's just stressful tring to put it together. "Do I have too much of this in it?" "Should I put more life drawings?", heck you don't know. You can reasearch a company all you want, and you'll never know exactly what they're looking for. I guess that's the point, least that's what I tell myself. I've already submitted to Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and DreamWorks, Wednsday I get to go through the hoops and submit to Disney. Actually that will probably be a story in its own. I had to call and schedule an appointment, and I can only make an appointment on Wednsdays between 10am and 12pm, then I can only park in spaces 90-96 or something. This is where it gets good, I'll go up the elevator and I get to a room with a reception desk, and no receptionist, fill out the forms and then call a number, then a rep will come down and review my portfolio. Whew, that'll be an adventure, but it makes sense, I'm sure they get a ton of nuts tring to apply and this is to make sure that people are serious. Well wish me luck, and I'll let you know how everything is going

I've been working at Universal Studios Doing charicatures for the past month, and this is what happens when boredome sets in. Cool thing, is that I can do things like this when I'm bored. At Seaworld I felt like some sort of criminal when ever I would just sit down at my easle and doodle mindlessly. Now during the slow parts, I just draw and draw and draw...or I sit and clean out my stupid air brush. I'm also working on a short, and byshort, I mean SHORT. Its a 20 second animation based off a 15minute comic I did. I posted some of the still frames I made for it, because I think they're damn funny.

John K has become Darth Vader

Okay since when are there rules to cartoons? Isn't that what makes cartoons awesome and wonderful? They have no rules, no boundaries, and therefore they can be anything. I couldn't get over John K's post about what a cartoon is http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com/
Why do cartoons need to be catagorized, labeled, filed away, and given boundaries? I love how he states that
"I figure it's my duty to remind everyone of what cartoons are and to come up with some defining characteristics"
Wow thank god John K has been sent from the heavens to save us from non cartooniness. I keep going to read his posts, and all I get from them is
1) He's John K
2) He made Ren and Stimpy
3) You better make cartoons to his standards or you suck.
This line I feel says it best.

" All real cartoonists think the butt is the funniest part of the anatomy and tend to do an inordinate amount of butt poking and crack exposure in their cartoons. If you are ashamed of buttcracks, you are probably ashamed to be drawing cartoons and shame on you for doing it."

So if I want to be a real Cartoonist I need to make sure I have tons of butt drawings in my sketchbook. You are not a cartoonist unless you draw butts. Plain and simple.

So why has John K become Darth Vader? He's become everything he hates. John K isn't a good artist because he followed rules, he's a good artist because he did things his way, he took a style of art and made it his own, and he didn't let anyone say anything to him about nothing. He shoved his passion for rear ends, and hillarious cartoons into the faces of exces and got away with it. So why now is he shoving his "rules" of being a cartoonist down the throats of everyone else? Why must he attack everyone elses attempts at funny cartoons? Why has he dubed himself the high know all of know all about cartoons?

John K has become Darth Vader, because he forgot how he got to where he is. Which is sad, because he's a really good artist, and I like a lot of his stuff. But I think the sadder part of all this is that there are artists out there that idolize him so much and he's pushing his rules on them with out telling them to just think for themselves. Funny cartoons come from having fun while you draw. It really makes a difference when you pick up that pen and just draw freely and let the ideas come out. But when you feel confined by rules you no longer have fun drawing.

And I'll probably receive tons of Hate mail for disagreeing with John K.

Karen and I are back, and we're totally amped. No longer are we stressing over our impending wedding, now we're stressing over moving to LA. But after spending a year and half planning a wedding, moving to LA, is going to be a pice of cake.

After a long year and a half, we're finally getting married. It's funny, it seems a lot of people (mostly guys) see getting married as an end to freedom, and I don't know about that. I think it frees you more than ever, because now you aren't alone and there's someone with you to always push you where you need to go, and in what you want to do. I've found I've become a stronger person, and its still 7 hours before I'm married. I can only image the adventure it will be once I am. See you on the other side, or at our honeymoon!!!

Today was life drawing class. As a stroke of stupid genius (meaning, why didn't I think of this sooner ) I put all the drawings and gestures are on two pages. Its Time For Life Drawing!!!

Once again its wednsday, and I went to life drawing. John Munson is at the class, I'm sure most people who actually read my blog, know who John Munson is, but for those that don't, he was an artist at Sea World, who I guess from what I've heard, was one of the worst. Anyways, we had an interesting coversation about being an artist, and going to school, and what you actually learn. I like to think that no matter if you go to school or not, you have two things to learn as an artist. First you learn the craft, and then you learn how to be an artist. Your education in both is never over, and it doesn't matter which one you start with either, but you have to learn a bit of both, I feel, to be an artist. (note I didn't say good artist). He told me about His experience with Jeff What's? school and how Jeff is being offered jobs, because he's really good. I'm sure I toatlly missed his point, but I feel that if you worry too much about being good enough to be offered jobs, then you're not going anywhere with your art. If you sit an try to learn everything you can about art and never experience life and never have anything to put into your art, than your art is bland and doesn;t mean anything. I may be going on a huge rant, but seriously, if all you can think out in your life is just getting up, drawing all day, going back to sleep, portfolio this and sketch nights that, and how you are going to get "better" you miss out on life, and its life that give art and meaning. You want to find a balance, on that's comfortable for you, and none else. To many times I see really awesome artists not doing anything, because they think their portfolio isn't good, or they need to still work on something. That's all good, but put your work out there, and go and live life. What's the point of being an artist, when you're so engrossed in your art, that you never enjoy?

Late Night Sketches Featuring, Mr Trump!!

Last Night Karen and I were up late and we were watching the "Apprentice". I like watching the end when Trump fires someone for pissing him off. And then he has these two assistants at his side that always agree with him. "That was a good firing Mr. Trump" or "good decision Mr. Trump", "Yes Sir may I have another Mr. Trump" and so on like that. What was even funnier about last night was the winning team got to have a fancy white caviar dinner at some really expensive millionaire lunch restaurant. Of course Ye olde Donald declines, because he'd rather have Arby's (who of course were his business clients, nothing like sucking up!). In Business someone's always kissing someone's ass. But I guess I can't fault Mr. Trump, because truthfully, I'd rather have Arby's too. Good Roast Beef.

I'm excited, my favortite show Ghost Hunters is back on. Its pretty cool, its about a paranormal investigation group, and they go to hauntings with cameras and high tech equipment and try to disprove that there's a haunting. They're on their third season, but they've caught some awesome footage of objects being moved, shadows, and last season they caught an image of a full body ghost with their heat camera. Its a great show, and I'm glad its back on, it gives Karen and I something to distract us from all our wedding stress. Less than two months to go and the clock is ticking!!! I drew this drawing while I was "goofing off" at work last year, but I finally got around to coloring in digitally. I tried some "new" techinique in coloring (and new as in new to me) where I section out the areas where light is hitting rather than where there's shadow. I don't know if I did it completely right, but I like the end result

I recently purchased some new colored brush pens, so now my sketches come at you in amazing technicolor!!! These pens are actually really awesome to work with. I probably hyped about them before, but I'm going to do it again anyways. They work well with colored pencils because they can go over the waxy lines and they blend with prisma colored markers too. Just awesome!! Bill Drastal Approved.

Karen and I made a stop by the Art Store the other day and they were have a huge sale on canvases, so we bought a couple small ones. I haven't painted anything since, waaaayyyy long time ago, and it was a heck of a lot of fun. Since the ones I have are small I can't really do much with em *the next one will probably be a coffee mug or something* but I have some bigger canvas boards and I think I'm going to do a series of paintings with some funny characters on them so stay tuned.

So today was another morning of life drawing. Nothing beats five buck for three hours of drawing naked people. I really enjoy going and it keeps me drawing and that keeps me feeling good inside. Lately I've felt like I've been behind or something because I haven't been drawing like I "used" to, but thats silly to think because I "used" to not be getting married, and I drew all day because that was my lousy job. I have to stop worring about the past and the future and be happy with whats going on right now. And there are alot of amazing things happening in my life and if I keep feeling down, I'll miss all of them.

That's right kids, don't forget to floss. So there's a story behind this sketch. I was looking for more freelance work and I found this guy on Craigslist.com, which is without a doubt most reputable source of freelance opportunities in the universe. Anyways, I met up with the guy, and he turns out to be this kinda weird, sensitive Oprah guy. Well turns out he is the amazing inventor of the the smiley tooth dental floss container. His claim to fame is reinventing the dental floss dispenser. Whoopty freaking doo, to add to this he had made a video for Oprah asking her to fund his smiley tooth campaign and yadda yadda. This guy was a piece of work, but I figured if he was going to pay me well, who cares who he is. So he explains smiley tooth to me, and says he wants to go to the nation dental association convention and present his new "invention" to the dental community, and he wanted me to help create a special hand out brochure he could give to people. The handout would have drawings of smiley and he'd be giving sound oral care advice, like brush up, or don't forget to floss, and all the junk, I of course would be providing the drawings of ole smiley. So everything was going pretty good at that point, then he told me that he previously had drawings of smiley tooth done by someone else, but what he wanted was to see my version of him. So I told him I'd do some sketches and come at him with a price for the whole project and go from there.

So couple days go by and here I was this morning, with three pages of rough sketches and a price in my head. The morning went bad from the beginning. I got there at around 8:45-8:50 and the meeting was at 9. I figured oh well no biggy, I'll just knock and be early. Well if takes him 20 minutes to finally get to the door and then he gives me some crap about he wasn't expecting me till 9 and I should show up when asked and blah blah blah. So ok fine, I was early, I show him the drawings and wait for his answer. Well turns out they weren't what he was looking for. I didn't draw smiley tooth I drew another tooth. Well yeah, idiot, you told me to draw my own versions of this character, and here they are. What really got me pissed was instead of just saying that he really wanted the tooth to look like the one on the box, he give me the run around the bush with some other crap about my drawings being a cousin or something. Come on man, be professional, if you wanted the drawings to be of the tooth on the box, you tell me that from the beginning, don't tell me to draw my version, cause that's what I'm going to do.

Well by this time I just wanted out of there, so I told him that my stlye was compatible and I wasn't up to the challenge. I could have just draw the tooth on the box if he had told me in the first place, but by now I was fed up with this guy. So I said no, and went on my way. And it felt good. You know sometimes you think you're desperate and you'll take any gig that comes your way, but it feels good when you have some pride in yourself and say no, to a crappy job.

So I've been attending a life drawing workshop and its great I finally can sit down and draw. And its funny because I'm all unemployed but I don't draw all day. Wired huh? Well not really, I am getting married in 3 months and threes a whole lot of to do, well...To do. Sometimes I'll get down on myself for not drawing all day, or not constantly sketching in a sketchbook, or heck even updating this blog, but then I think wait, I'm doing things in my life. Things are changing, but I need to embrace that change. So sorry mindless sketching, you'll always be there, and when the time is right, I'll be back drawing crazy stuff again!!!! But for now, its nice to draw some naked people every Wednesday morning.

And I can't stand blogs, "Ohh look at me, I have sketches to show you, and I have important things to say." Boy I sure hope all the people that don't know who I am, read my posts and act like they like me. Then I'll be King of the internet, bow down to my many comments and puny life. But isn't that what blogs are ultimately all about? People who are trying desperately to make something "valid" in their lives, people aren't happy with just a status quo in their daily lives that they need to get approval from internet users? I dunno, I'm probably missing some "point" to all this, but that's just how I see it. Anyway, I mostly got this blog, so that I can post comments on my friends blogs. Its a horrible vicious cycle, I know. What really gets my goat are all the sketch blogs out there. Some Artists figured that a website just isn't enough and decided they needed to make other artists even more self conscious by posting all their daily sketches on the internet. Man I already feel like I can't draw well enough, when I see their polished work in films, cartoons, books, commercials, websites, magazines, comic books, and conventions, NOW I get to see what they do everyday!!! You know what I do everyday? I wake up, kiss my fiance, think about what needs to be done, and then how those things that need to be done weigh against 5 hours of Star Trek. I love it, and though I know I'm not sketching everyday, and working on tons of "projects" that now I have a blog to post everything on. Oooooo maybe someone more important will see my work and all my dreams will come true. I doubt it. I have a Deviant art gallery, and no one seems to care. But now every shmoe artist (your truly included) HAS to have a sketchblog it seems, or they aren;t cool like those big important artists out there. When really, if you want to be professional, just do the art you love and have fun doing it. Accept yourself for who you are and what you do, so what, you aren't drawing everyday like "that guy" or you aren't making your own comics like "whohisface", if you create the art you love and love creating it, then evetually your time will come. And that's my two cents about the whole thing, aaannnnnd maybe that's what this blogging thing is all about. I get to type and rant and rave about everything I'm thinking no matter how dumb it is, and I assure you, it's dumb. And it actually feels good. But wait isn't that why we have journals and sketchbooks? I guess the anonymity of the internet is what does it. Oh well I suppose I have to learn "something new" everyday, and this isn't all that bad. For those that actually stuck around for all that text above you, I wish you the best of days.
